Properly controlling a salt water chlorinator – There are three things that are important when using salt water chlorination:

1.  Keep the proper level of salt and stabilizer in the pool

Most salt water chlorinators require a 2500 – 3000 parts per million salt concentration in the water.  This can barely be tasted in the water, but provides enough salt for the salt cell to produce the chlorine needed to maintain the pool.

If the salt level drops too low, the system will not be able to produce chlorine.  Most systems have some sort of indicator to show low salt levels in the pool.  The answer to low salt levels is to add rock salt to the skimmer and let it dissolve into the water.

NOTE:  If the system indicates a low salt level, be sure to test it with a salt test kit before adding salt.  If a salt cell is failing or is scaled it may give a false low salt indicator.

It is also important to have a good stabilizer level (30 – 50 ppm) in the pool or the sunlight will burn up the chlorine and the saltwater system will not be able to keep up with the demand.

2.  Adjust the control on the salt system

The salt system has a setting that controls the amount of chlorine that is generated.  This can be adjusted to keep the production of chlorine in line with the demand.

3.  Make sure the pool is running long enough to produce adequate chlorine

The timers on the pool should be set to run during the hottest daylight hours, preferably from at least 10 am to 6 pm during the summer.  This is when your chlorine usage is highest.  The system will only produce chlorine while the pump is running so it is important to run the pool long enough.

Shocking a Pool (Superchlorination)

If the chlorine reading gets too low then it is important to superchlorinate the pool in order to quickly raise up the chlorine level to avoid unsanitary water.  The salt system should be sized to provide sufficient chlorine output, but in the event of very heavy chlorine demand (swim party, heavy rains, etc.) it might be necessary to supplement the chlorine feed with a manual shock (this is a rare occurence).

It is important to use only as much granular chlorine as is needed.  Many salt system owners are sensitive to heavy amounts of packaged chlorine with all its byproducts.

Simply adding more salt to the system WILL NOT be enough to solve the problem if you have a low chlorine level.  That will enable the salt system to begin making chlorine, but will not immediately raise the chlorine level

There are plenty of things to do to prepare your pool for the Summer. Below is a Physical Maintenance Self-Checklist and a Chemical Priority List.

Physical Maintenance Self-Checklist

1. Remove, clean, fold and store pool cover.
2. Test water balance; adjust calcium, Alkalinity, and pH levels.
3. Replace stored items; ladders, auto cleaner, baskets, plugs, gauges, etc.
4. Inspect and test electrical service to pumps, lights, heaters, etc. Load testing.
5. Lube plugs, fittings, valves and o-rings.
6. Flood lines; prime-up, start-up and adjust filtration equipment.
7. Brush tiles/liner and scrub skimmers with cleanser.
8. Blow off, then hose pool deck.
9. Skim pool surface. Vacuum pool to waste using portable vacuum equipment.
10. Super chlorinate to breakpoint levels with liquid chlorine.
11. Brush pool walls and steps. Re-check chemical levels in 12-24 hrs, adjust as needed.
12. Backwash filter if pressure gauge rises 8-10 lbs, or flow diminishes considerably.

Chemicial Priority List

When your pool is clear, each of the following chemical groups may be adjusted in this order.

1. Balancers: pH, Alkalinity, Calcium, Cyanuric Acid (for Chlorine pools)
2. Sanitizers: (Chlorine, Salt, Mineral, OR Biquanide), Shock, Algaecides
3. Accessory Chemicals: Clarifiers, Coloring Agents, Filter Cleaners, Flocculants

Many factors may contribute to the growth of algae. To know the reason why your pool might grow algae, consider some of the following questions:

• How much sunlight does my pool absorb?
• Do I have enough sanitizer in my pool?
• Is my pool circulating and filtering enough?
• Are there Phosphates in my water?

Algae thrive in warm, still and poorly sanitized waters. Maintaining the correct amount of circulation and sanitation in your pool is important to help combat the growth of algae—especially on a hot day. Sanitizers have the ability to kill and prevent visible algae; however, algae spores may remain in the water. Algaecides are best recommended to be used in combination with your sanitizer to eliminate the potential for spores to bloom. While treating algae in your pool, always check for phosphates. Phosphates are biological building blocks; nutrients that feed algae while interfering with your sanitizer’s ability to do its job. Phosphates may be released into the water not only from dead algae but also from rain, trees, air, and everyday soaps, detergents, and shampoos.

What to Do:

Always be sure that your filter system is clean before beginning the algae clean-up process.

For common algae, follow these easy steps:

1. Remove any large visible biomass (algae, leaves, debris, etc…) manually or with a vacuum before treating your pool with chemicals.
2. Test water to ensure PH and Alkalinity levels are okay. Also test to ensure there are not high levels of phosphates.
3. Circulate a “Killing Treatment” amount of algaecide in your pool for 30-60 minutes.
4. “Double Shock” your pool with the appropriate “Shock”.
5. Allow the Algaecide & Shock to circulate through your Pool for a minimum of 24 hours before seeing results.

It may take several days for your pool to turn to a clear state. Consider using a Flocculent or Clarifier to speed this process along. Morton’s always recommends speaking with a professional when using chemicals that you are unfamiliar with.

When treating a pool it’s always important to add chemicals in the appropriate order. We’ve broken down the basic parts components of water for you to make it easy. Always test and treat your water in the following order.

1: Balancers: PH, Alkalinity, Hardness, Cyanuric Acid

PH: PH scale measures the acidity or base of water. The PH scale ranges from 0, being acidic, to 14, which is basic. 7.2, the neutral PH level, and is ideal for your pool water.

Alkalinity: The total Alkalinity of water is closely related to the pH. It is the “buffering capacity of the water.” This mean it helps keep the PH in line by giving water the ability to resist PH changes from the addition of acids. 80-120ppm is ideal for your pool.

Hardness: Total Hardness of water is the measurement of present Mineral Salts. These include: Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminum, Iron, and Manganese. The primary Mineral Salt for increasing the Total Hardness is Calcium. 250-500ppm is ideal for your pool.

Cyanuric Acid: Cyanuric Acid is a stabilizing agent, so that Chlorine does not dissipate quickly. Think of it as “Sunscreen for your Chlorine.”

2: Sanitizers: Chlorine, Salt, Shock

Chlorine: Pool water Sanitizer and Disinfectant. 1-3 ppm.

Chloramines: As Chlorine sanitizes, it may combine with other organic compounds such as: ammonia, chlorine, nitrogen, and other byproducts from swimmers.

Salt: NaCl, Sodium Chloride, is another type of Chlorine Sanitizer when combined with a Chlorine/Salt Generator. Often, Salt Sanitizers are distinguishable from Chlorine pools by the softer water feeling and high PH.

Shock: Oxidizes the residual sanitizer chemical. This frees up space for more sanitizer to do it’s job.

3: Accessory: Algaecides, Clarifiers, Sequestering Agents

Algaecidal & Algaestatic: These are products that Kill and Prevent the growth of Algae and Algae Spores.

Clarifiers & Flocculants: These are products which coagulate fine dirt particles, organic waste, and oils that are too fine to pass through your filtration system. Strong Flocculants have the ability to sink the waste particles to the bottom of the pool, allowing for later vacuuming.

Sequestering Agents: By isolating minerals and metals, sequestering agents prevent scale buildup and metal oxidation.
